Okay so, WOW we had a lot more people submit entries than I expected!
It was so fun to read all of these. There were so many awesome submissions that it was difficult to choose, and I had some anxiety about needing to even pick a top 3, because I dont want anyone to think that what they did wasnt good! I like them all and will be commenting on each one in the users gallery.
Kays comments: Twiggy's paneling is captivating in this page. Her expressions are solid and her dialogue flows well and is believable. The dream sequence is my favorite bit - lit with an ethereal bloom, the slow introduction of blood is seriously creepy. Overall this page had a great mood that drew me in.
Fables comments: This page really sucks you in, and I got to credit the great panel layout for that. You could remove all the characters and artwork and just have a series of blank boxes in front of you and STILL feel that pacing and tension. The grief and pain is palpable and believable. If you’ve ever suffered from loss, this sequence might feel familiar to you.----------------
Kay’s comments: I love how Arven was able to create a dark atmosphere while using so much color. Im a sucker for moody lighting. I also enjoyed seeing her confident restructuring of claymore and scythe's shapes, adding more character to them than I ever did.
Fables comments: This is some really expert layering of colored pencil. It’s a difficult enough medium to work with when rendering characters under normal light, but the dicey lighting of a late sunset WHILE combined with bringing characters in and out of shadow is a great accomplishment. But more impressive is how the story could have worked into the greater comic. This is a big reveal moment and the page is paced to match. And personally, I adore the interpretation of Clay’s and Scythe’s designs.----------------------
Kay’s comments: I really like Nanaki's style. She submitted a few beautifully watercolored pages, but one among her pages whose story stood best as a 1-pager. Its got some banter and some mystery, which makes it a fun read and leaves you wondering what will happen next.
Fables comments: Lighting, watercolor, and story potential. We have a creepy foreshadowing of events to come in the form of a subtle shadow. And two featured characters are likeable and distinctive. Also, hand-lettered. That’s a challenge!--------------------
And here are all of the other fantastic entries (in no order!). Thank you to everyone who put their time and love into creating a piece for my first ever contest. I hope you had fun and learned something about making comic pages!
To those of you who linked me to deviantart stashes, if you’d like me to put a thumbnail here, upload it regularly and send me the link! If you entered and do not see your thumbnail here I apologize, I did see your entry but it may have not gotten copied over from the document I was organizing them in. Please note me and I will include it. Also if you did not submit in time but still want to make a comic and have it be posted here, feel free to note it to me and I will include it above! To winners, I will be sending your prizes tomorrow. Thanks again to all
